At UDUMBARA Ceramics, recognizing where our materials come from is central to our mission of creating sustainably developed ceramics. The clay that shapes all our products is sourced from southwestern Finland, specifically from the village of Kultela in Somero and the fields of Ojala.

Finland, with its majestic forests and numerous lakes, also harbors ancient secrets—namely, valuable clay deposits. The history of Finnish clay soil extends back thousands of years, having been shaped by the last ice age which sculpted our country’s topography and left behind rich clay fields. Nature has provided the raw materials for design and crafts for centuries.

The field in Ojala, where UDUMBARA’s clay originates, exemplifies sustainable local resource use. Nestled in an idyllic rural landscape, this clay is brimming with potential that I harness in my work as a designer and craftsman. The process of extracting and transforming this clay into beautiful pots requires both skill and respect for the material.

I made this video that showcases how I use the clay from the Kultela area. This video is designed to inspire and demonstrate how local materials can create beauty and ensure transparency in sourcing.

I invite you to see for yourself where our clay comes from. Explore the field of Ojala through this Google Maps link and view an aerial image of the area that enables my craftsmanship.

We are committed to continuing our ecological and sustainable practices, ensuring that each UDUMBARA product is not only designed with timelessness in mind but also minimizes the use of our planet’s resources.
